Makoto Shibata

Head of FINOLAB, chief community officer

FINOLAB

Mr. Shibata started his current position in Jul 2019, in charge of FINOLAB community, which consists of 50+ startup members and 20+ corporate members at the heart of Tokyo financial district. He has been involved in the community from the early days and became a co-founder of Finovators, pro bono mentor group, to support FINOLAB in 2016.
Until Sep. 2018, he was leading The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ`s R&D in emerging technology and planning of FinTech initiatives, innovation, and online / mobile financial services. He worked in the digital banking area for 20 years and he was involved in a wide range of projects. His previous career in banking, starting at The Bank of Tokyo, includes Corporate Planning, Accounting, Corporate Finance, and Retail Customer Services. From Oct. 2018, he became Executive Fellow of Japan Digital Design, innovation entity of MUFG. And he conducted research on FinTech as an Academic Visitor at University of Oxford until Mar. 2019.
He holds a Bachelor of Economics from University of Tokyo and a Master of Science in Development Economics from University of Oxford.

Liam Griffith

Yoshiyuki Hoshino

Yoshiyuki Hoshino leads Broadridge’s business operations in Japan. Prior to joining Broadridge, Yoshiyuki was with Barclays Japan for 3 years, serving as Managing Director and Head of Japan Operations.  Prior to joining Barclays, he worked at Goldman Sachs Japan for 8 years as Managing Director, Head of Japan and Korea Operations.

Yoshiyuki also held senior posts at Deutsche Bank Japan and Merrill Lynch Japan.  He has been working in leading investment banks in Japan for a total of 30 years.   

He has held a number of positions in Japan’s market bodies, which has enabled him to significantly contribute to the development of the Japanese securities market throughout his career including JGB rolling settlement, building the corporate bond depository, and introduction of DVP settlement among others.

My mandate at Daiwa Securities is to advocate and drive innovation across the electronic trading platform with the goal of creating novel value-adding products and services for our institutional client base. I am also responsible for the launch and oversight of a 3-year collaborative research program with the Department of Engineering, University of Tokyo for developing next-generation financial technologies and services through the applications of AI. I also continue responsibility for the liquidity pool and SOR that I launched back in 2009, as well as the algorithmic trading platform.

Prior to Daiwa, I was head program trader at Citi Global Markets where I also led trading algorithm development for the desk. Prior to Citi, I performed various roles at Morgan Stanley from agency and principal program trading, running half of the single-name option book, to building out the delta-one derivatives business from scratch. I have a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in Quantum Chemistry and I enjoy solving quantum computing problems in my free time.

Tatsuo Ichikawa

Tatsuo is Managing Director and Head of Quant Team in Investment Division at Japan Post Bank since 2016, and he is a member of the ALM Committee. He is responsible for all quantitative analysis including asset allocation, front risk management and investment strategies as well as developing trading systems for the investment division. From 2018, he is also responsible for Rates and FX Department. Prior to joining Japan Post Bank, his career started with Morgan Stanley Japan in 1999 as Interest Rate Strategist after graduating from Graduate School of Waseda University with a Masters Degree in Mathematics.  In 2005, he joined ABN AMRO Securities Japan, which was subsequently integrated into RBS Securities Japan, as head of Japan Research.
 
Tatsuo rejoined Morgan Stanley Japan in October 2009 and became head of JGB/swap trading and sales desk.  He was promoted to Managing Director in 2010 and appointed Head of Japan Interest Rate Product Group. He was named Co-Head of Japan Fixed Income and appointed to a Board member of Morgan Stanley Japan Holdings in January 2013. His last role at Morgan Stanley MUFG was Head of Japan Fixed Income Trading.

While working at Japan Post Bank, Tatsuo is teaching fixed income investments and ALM strategy at Tokyo Metropolitan University where he earned PhD in Business Administration.

Ken Takamiya is head of Asia-Pacific banks & other Ken Takamiya is head of Asia-Pacific banks & other financials research. He focuses on the global financial situation and its implications for the share price performance of Japanese banks, conducting discussions with banks and regulators in Europe, the US and Asia. He also assesses progress and issues on global expansion by Japanese banks based on in-country research. After joining the Bank of Tokyo (currently Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ) in 1992, he moved to Nomura Asset Management in 2000 as a buy-side analyst and then became a sell-side analyst with a move to Credit Suisse First Boston in 2004. Ken joined Nomura in 2009. He placed first in 2020 for the banking sector in the Nikkei Veritas Rankings and he also placed first in 2020 for the banks sector in the Institutional Investor Rankings.
